Dry Eye Q & A
What Are The Symptoms Of Dry Eye?
Dry eye commonly occurs when the eyes don't have enough moisture. This lack of moisture commonly causes issues like persistent itchiness, significant redness in the eyes and pain on the eye surface. Some people suffering from dry eye have a gritty or sandy feeling in the eyes, and many people who wear contacts are unable to do so comfortably due to dry eye irritation. In some cases, dry eyes can cause blurry vision.
Why Does Dry Eye Happen?
Dry eye may occur because the tear glands are unable to make enough tears. It can also happen because there is a chemical irregularity in the tears produced. Allergies and medications like nasal decongestants and certain blood pressure medications, as well some immune system disorders like lupus or rheumatoid arthritis and menopause may also be the cause of dry eye. Chronic dry eye is a condition in itself which causes inflammation in the tissue surrounding the eyes including the tear glands which impedes a person’s ability to produce natural tears.
How Is Dry Eye Diagnosed?
Dry eye can be diagnosed after a complete eye exam. The doctor will also perform a Schirmer tear test, which measures tear production.
